Waynesburg University announces 2018 commencement speakers

Rev. Dr. Stuart Broberg will serve as the Baccalaureate speaker, and David E. Barensfeld will address the Class of 2018 as the Commencement speaker.

The celebration will honor more than 400 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from the Waynesburg campus as well as the University’s off-campus sites in Cranberry, Monroeville and Southpointe.

Baccalaureate services will be held in Roberts Chapel at 11 a.m., and Commencement will be held on the front lawn of Miller Hall at 2 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the Commencement ceremony will be held in Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Families are encouraged to arrive early, as the Commencement processional begins approximately 20 minutes prior to the ceremony.

Rev. Dr. Stuart Broberg

Rev. Broberg currently serves as pastor and head of staff of The Church of the Covenant in Washington. He previously served as assistant to the president of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and pastorates in Michigan, Iowa and Virginia.

Broberg has also served interim pastorates at First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Upper St. Clair.

He has been a member of several boards, including the Presbyterian Foundation, New Wilmington Mission Conference and the Presbyterian Endowment Education and Resources Network. Additionally, he has chaired the Major Gifts Committee and Planned Giving Committee of the National Capital Presbytery, as well as various committees with the Pittsburgh Presbytery and Pittsburgh Presbytery Foundation.

Currently, he is the president of the board for Camp Pine Springs in Jennerstown and is a member of the Waynesburg University Board of Trustees.

Broberg attended Dickinson College and the Dickinson School of Law, Princeton Theological Seminary and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where he received his Doctor of Ministry degree. He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA) by the Washington Presbytery.

In 2012, he received an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, from Waynesburg University.

David E. Barensfeld

Barensfeld currently serves as the president and CEO of Ellwood Group, Inc. and is the chairman of its board of directors. Ellwood Group is a manufacturer of specialty steel and nickel ingots, forgings and iron castings as components for large capital equipment. The company has eight divisions with plants in Pennsylvania, Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan and Ontario.

He joined Ellwood City Forge in 1979 and became president and chief executive officer of Ellwood Group in 1983. In 2017, he became chairman of the board of directors.

Since 2016, Barensfeld has been the chairman of the board of directors for Commonwealth Partners, Harrisburg. In Pittsburgh, he serves on the board of directors of Elizabeth Carbide Die, the Heinz History Center, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and of the National Association of Manufacturers in Washington, D.C.

Barensfeld earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from the University of Pennsylvania, his Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School and his Master of Science in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University.
