The following clinical education roles are defined for the athletic training student who has been accepted to the Athletic Training Advanced Program (ATAP) at Waynesburg University. By signing this document the athletic training student (ATS) acknowledges the supervisory roles and the responsibilities for each.
Direct Supervision Constant visual and auditory interaction between athletic training student and certified athletic trainer or Approved Clinical Instructor (ACI).
Clinical Supervision Clinical experience that involves daily visual and auditory interaction between the athletic training student and an allied health professional (physician, physical therapist, Chiropractor, Dentist, etc). The clinical instructor is available to plan, direct, and advise the students’ clinical experience.
Role and Responsibility of Athletic Training Students:
Acting as a First Resonder is voluntary and noncompulsory experience outside of the ATEP requirements. At no time shall a clinical instructor require the ATS to provide services to athletes without direct supervision. First Responders experiences will not be documented as part of the clinical education requirements (approximately 15-20 hours a week).
First Responder duties are not to take place of certified athletic training staff services.
First Responder duties are limited to the following:
Acceptable First Responder Services:
Administering first aid for acute injuries sustained by student-athletes:
• Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation
• Blister or wound care
• Compressive wraps to prevent injury and control swelling
• Basic Life Support in an emergency situation
• Provide assistance with basic stretching routines.
• Application of tape to prevent an injury once the student has shown to be proficient in the skill
•Application of splints for stabilization of an acute injury or for the protection of an existing injury provided that the splint has been previously applied to the athlete for the same injury.
• Conduct an initial assessment to determine immediate injury/illness management.
• Medical documentation of an initial assessment.
• Medical referral of sick/injured athletes in accordance to established protocol.
Unacceptable Services:
• Initiate, change, or progress a rehabilitation plan
• Use electrical or sound modalities in any instance
• Conduct a orthopedic injury evaluation of injuries that occur during practice or games
• Make return-to-play decisions during practice or games
• Provide athletic taping and/or bracing for return-to-play following an injury during practice and gam
• Services provided by an ATS who is not under the daily visual & auditory supervision MUST be limited to first responder duties
• In the event that an ATS is acting as a first responder at home or while traveling, no hours shall be documented for the Athletic Training Education Program clinical practicum experience
I understand that athletic training coverage for Waynesburg University athletic teams is considered the responsibility of the home team during away competitions. If the athlete is in need of athletic training services the ATC covering the venue will assume this duty.
