Dear Prospective Athletic Training Student:

Welcome to Waynesburg University’s Athletic Training Education Program web site! Here at Waynesburg University we have a rich history of success. In 1985, President Thomas Mills proposed that a new major in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training be created. In the spring of 1987, the University's Board of Trustees approved the new major. In the Fall of 1988 thirty four students were recruited for the new major. In 1992 our first class of students graduated. From 1992 to 1997 the program grew and in 1998 the program was accredited. In 2006 the Athletic Trianing Education Program continued its Accreditation status with CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education) Accreditation assures you, as someone interested in the best possible educational experience, that our program continues to meet the CAATE national standards and criteria.

Athletic training is an exciting and rapidly growing field and our program is committed to staying a step ahead. We have restructured courses and have extended our clinical practicum courses which are designed to provide you with more directed, hands-on clinical experience and practice through the three years in the major. As a student in our program you can expect to evaluate injuries, treat patients with therapetutic modalities, and rehabilitate post-operative patients. In addition, our faculty and administration are committed to our program and your professional preparation. Our program mission is to prepare you for a career in Athletic Training and/or a related allied health profession. Successful completion of our program enables you to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. The curriculum emphasizes lifelong learning, clinical excellence, compassion, quality health care, and service. We are looking for highly motivated, intelligent, conscientious individuals who are interested in learning how to provide quality health care to physically active patients and become positive contributors to the athletic training profession.

The main emphasis of our program is to develop strong clinicians; athletic trainers who not only know what to do in any given situation, but also know why they are doing it. To achieve this evidence based practice is ephasized throughout the curriculum. We also emphasize critical thinking and a well-rounded knowledge base, as these qualities are essential for success in our rapidly changing society. Once you become involved in our Athletic Training Education Program, you will be exposed to a wide variety of challenging hands-on clinical experiences. As your skills develop, you will provide health care to Waynesbsurg's intercollegiate athletes under the direct supervision of an Approved Clinical Instructor in affiliated settings, like area high schools and sports medicine clinics. Waynesburg Family Medicine and Advanced Orthopedics & Rehab (Team Physicians office) offer you the opportunity to observe and learn from physicians as they evaluate and treat patients. If you are looking for a dynamic and challenging athletic training experience, we ask you to consider the Waynesburg University Athletic Training Education Program. If you have not already done so, I invite you to contact us today to schedule a visit to our campus. Also if you are interested in experiencing the Athletic Training Profession first hand; inquire about our Shadow Experience. We will make arrangements for you to tour our campus and facilities with one of our Athletic Training Students, sit in on one or two of our academic classes, and meet with one of our faculty members. We would certainly appreciate the opportunity to assist you with the difficult task of choosing the right educational program, and to be involved in your professional preparation. Please take the time to complete our online inquiry form. Once We have your contact information we will send you out a packet of additional information. Again, thank you for visiting our website, and we wish you well with your University search!
