Bonner Scholars Program

Access to Education, Opportunity to Serve
This unique scholarship program offers selected students financial assistance to supplement the College's financial aid package. In return, Bonner Scholars commit to serve an average of eight to ten hours per week during the school year in community service programs.
This program is supported by the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation, a national philanthropic organization based in Princeton, NJ. Waynesburg College has the honor of being only one of two colleges in Pennsylvania to have been selected to participate in the Bonner Scholars Program. Waynesburg College Bonner Scholarships are awarded to students who meet specific academic and financial aid need criteria and who have demonstrated commitment to community service. In return, Bonner Scholars commit to serve an average of eight to ten hours per week during the school year in community service programs.
Waynesburg College has 60 students in the Bonner Scholars Program that generates 600 hours of community service per week. Each year, 15 new Waynesburg College Bonner Scholars are chosen through an intensive interview and selection process which includes:
- Completed Merit Scholarship application with 4 written essay questions
- Demonstrate a high financial need
- Placement in the top 40% of the high school class and GPA of 3.0
- Personal interview by the selection committee
Additonal Information:
- Program requires completion of 140 hrs of unpaid service at a non-profit organization each semester (average 8-10 hours per week)
- Scholarship is renewable for 4 consecutive years based upon the fulfillment of program requirements
- Bonner Scholars receive $2,100 each year ($1,050 for the Fall term and $1,050 for the Spring term)
- Funds go toward the student's financial aid package
- Two summers of community service are also required and students receive additional scholarship funds upon completion of their summer service requirements
Goals:
- Provide access to a college education for students with high financial need
- Afford students an opportunity to use their abilities, talents, and leadership skills to serve others while in college
- Create a supportive community of students on campus whose common focus on community service gives them a sense of purpose and meaning
- Assist students in becoming civically engaged, responsible citizens and develop into servant leaders
