Frequently Asked Questions

What type of athletic insurance does the athletic department carry?
The athletic department carries a secondary athletic injury accident policy for athletes. This policy will cover up the the $75,000 deductible set by the NCAA for a catastrophic injury. This insurance will only be used once the athletes primary insurance policy has been billed.

How does my child qualify for secondary coverage?
The secondary policy covers every student who is a varsity athlete at Waynesburg University.

How does the insurance coverage work?
Normally, most student athletes are covered under one or more parents’ policy. If a student athlete is injured the parent’s insurance is primary and all medical bills must be submitted to that company. When the primary has paid its share of the bills, the remaining bill is forwarded to the University for submission under the athletic accident policy. This submission of the bill must be accompanied by an explanation of benefits from the primary insurance company. This is necessary for the claim to be processed. Students not having a primary policy can use the University policy as their primary provided the have been seen by the athletic training department for evaluation. In that case the medical bills will be submitted directly to the University's insurance company with the proper claim forms.

Do I have to pay a Co-Pay for Physician Visits?
Students who are refered for outside medical care for general medical conditions, such as the common cold or other related illnesses will be requried to comply with all personal insurance guidelines. This means that if the insurance policy which the student athlete is covered under requires a co-pay for office visits then it will be the responsibility of the student or the parent to pay for the office visit. If you do not have any insurance, the student may see a PA on campus per availability.

When is an athlete referred to a physician?
Student athletes are referred to a physician if in the opinion of the athletic training staff the condition or injury is beyond the scope of practice for the athletic trainers or if there appears to be an emergency. Also in accordance with Pennsylvania State Law, any injuries which do not appear to be improving are generally referred.

What if I belong to an HMO?
Students who are covered by a HMO plan away from the Waynesburg area are strongly urged by the athletic medical staff to establish a PCP in the area. By doing so students who belong to a HMO can be seen locally without delaying necessary medical care.

Which physicians can an athlete see under the secondary insurance plan?
The school insurance does not require specific referrals, so the athlete is free to seek medical care of her or his choice. However it is highly recommended that the athlete see our team physician(s) to avoid unnecessary charges when the medical bills exceed coverage. Please be aware that the secondary insurance policy will only cover athletic injuries.

Towards which bills can the secondary insurance coverage can be applied?
The school insurance will pay most providers and specialties if the injury is directly related to an athletic injury.

What types of things are not covered under secondary insurance?
The secondary accident policy will not pay for illnesses even if the illness can be attributed to sport participation. The policy will also not pay for bills related to preexisting conditions which may include athletic injuries. Also the policy will not cover orthopedic bracing.

What are the parent's and/or athlete's responsibilities?
As the athlete’s primary insurance is typically through the parent, the parent normally receives the medical bills and explanation of benefits. The parent needs to be sure that the medical bills are forwarded to the primary carrier. When the primary insurance carrier has completed its disposition of the bill, the parents should forward the remaining bills and explanation of benefits to the Athletics Department.

Will I have to pay for any health care costs that arise due to an athletic injury?
For an injury which occurs due to a one time trauma, there should not be any costs associated with the injury. This is provided that the athlete is responsible enough to make sure all necessary paperwork is completed and sent to its proper place.
