University hosts Environmental Week, hopes to “push the limits” on green initiatives
In observance of Earth Day, Waynesburg University hosted its first Environmental Week from Saturday, April 17 through Friday, April 23. The week was designed to bring awareness to environmental issues and help students, faculty and staff become more eco-friendly.
The University’s EcoStewards Club hosted the weeklong event. Each day had a theme including Organic Day and Recycling Day and daily activities were planned for the campus community. The EcoStewards led a campus cleanup and encouraged the campus to conserve energy by turning off any unnecessary lighting throughout the week.
“Being environmentally conscience is part of our future,” said club president, Dorothy Rurak. “Our campus has amazing potential to be a leader in environmental awareness. It is part of our mission as a club to achieve this goal.”
Rurak praised the University for its support and their efforts to make Waynesburg University more environmentally sound.
Other activities during the week included trivia games, a giant recycling monster and classes held outdoors in an attempt to save on energy costs.
“Almost every week I find out something new Waynesburg University is trying to implement to be environmentally friendly,” Rurak said. “I would like to see us push the limits and be as ‘green’ as is practical.”
Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region. The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and is one of only 27 Bonner Scholar schools in the country, offering local, regional and international opportunities to touch the lives of others through service.
