Matriculation ceremony to welcome freshman class

On Friday, Aug. 22, the 2008-2009 academic school year will officially begin at Waynesburg University. The traditional matriculation ceremony will take place on the lawn in front of Miller Hall on the campus of Waynesburg University. President Timothy R. Thyreen and other University leaders will individually welcome the incoming freshman class.

“The University is looking forward to sharing all the wonderful opportunities it has to offer with these new students,” Thyreen said. “We know Waynesburg University will provide them with the academic rigor and the values necessary to serve others in the vocation they choose.”

As part of the matriculation ceremony tradition, the University’s choral group, the Lamplighters, will sing and the incoming freshmen and their families will hear remarks from President Thyreen.

Waynesburg University will welcome approximately 470 new students. These students represent most of the U.S., including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia. Four international students will also join the campus community.

Matriculation will mark the beginning of a weekend of events created to introduce freshmen to their new home at Waynesburg University. The incoming class will meet with their faculty advisors, participate in activities that allow them to meet other new students, and attend numerous informational meetings.

In the case of inclement weather, the matriculation ceremony will be held in Marisa Fieldhouse.

Upperclassmen will move into residence halls on Sunday, Aug. 24. Classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 25.
