Mini-Relay surpasses $15,000 goal

On Sunday, April 18, Waynesburg University held its annual Mini-Relay for Life event on the campus of Waynesburg University. The event was held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and raised more than $15,000 for cancer research. This year marked the University’s third successful year hosting the event as it exceeded monetary and participant goals.

“The event was very successful,” said Kelley Hardie, director of Housing and coordinator of the University’s Mini-Relay. “It is wonderful to see the commitment and passion from our entire campus for this truly remarkable charity event.”

The event, a joint effort of the University and the American Cancer Society, included typical Relay For Life events including a Luminaria Ceremony and a Survivors’ Lap. This year, 35 teams participated in the event, an increase of five teams from the 2009 Mini-Relay.

Teams split their members into groups to walk for an hour at a time, making sure a representative of each team was on the course at all times. Despite the gloomy weather, approximately 400 people participated in the event, displaying the dedication of Waynesburg University students, faculty and staff, and the local community.

Kaitlyn Karan and Joshua HooblerDonations will be accepted and added to the Waynesburg University total through May 3.

“Through this fundraiser, we are able to unite the campus for one great cause,” Hardie said. “Together we will make a difference!”

Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region. The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and is one of only 27 Bonner Scholar schools in the country, offering local, regional and international opportunities to touch the lives of others through service.
