Zimmerman selected scholarship recipient by National Athletic Trainers’ Association Foundation

L’lee Zimmerman was recently named a recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Foundation scholarship. Zimmerman, a junior athletic training major at Waynesburg University, will receive the honor at the 61st NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia held in Philadelphia, Pa., in June.

“It is quite an honor for any of our students to receive a scholarship, but especially one at the national level,” said Michele Kabay, director of the Athletic Training Education Program at Waynesburg University.

The scholarship was open to juniors and seniors or first-year graduate athletic training students who belong to the NATA.

“Our program director makes sure that we know about available scholarships and I also received an e-mail from the NATA,” Zimmerman said. “It is really exciting to receive a national scholarship and I am honored to receive the award as a junior.”

Zimmerman will receive $2,300 to use toward her athletic training education. She applied for the scholarship online and was sponsored by a certified athletic trainer.

Waynesburg University’s Athletic Training Education Program faculty, according to Zimmerman, have worked hard to help prepare her for her future goals.

“The faculty members emphasize the importance of understanding what we learn in the classroom and not just memorizing facts, which I think better prepares us for our careers,” she said.

Zimmerman said she enjoys the diagnostic aspect of the athletic training major.

“I love the puzzle of trying to figure out what an athlete has injured,” she said. “I like taking all the pieces of the history, signs, symptoms and tests, and putting them together to form a diagnosis.”

Zimmerman’s future goals include attending graduate school and working at a sports medicine center.

Founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Waynesburg University is located on a traditional campus in the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, with three adult centers located in the Pittsburgh region. The University is a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and is one of only 27 Bonner Scholar schools in the country, offering local, regional and international opportunities to touch the lives of others through service.
