Students to serve non-profit organizations, homeless in Philadelphia
Dave Calvario, director of the Center for Service Leadership, and 19 Waynesburg University students will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., over spring break to work with the Center for Student Missions (CSM).
The University has partnered with the CSM for more than six years and has served in Nashville, New York City, the District of Columbia and Philadelphia. The group will leave Waynesburg on Saturday, March 1 and return Friday, March 7.
The mission team will assist a number of non-government organizations by serving at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food banks and thrift stores. The students will see the impoverished parts of the city and will interact with homeless individuals by offering them a snack and asking for prayer requests.
“Participating in a mission service trip pushes each participant outside his or her comfort zone and allows them to experience situations that are otherwise foreign to them,” Calvario said. “God has called each of us to serve our brothers and sisters and I know of no better way to do this than through participating in a mission service trip.”
After experiencing the Center for Student Missions Philadelphia trip last year, Andrew Naymick and Janet Carson decided to return.
“Philadelphia was one of the most rewarding trips I have ever been on. No matter where you went in Philadelphia, you always found someone that needed help and you felt like you made a difference,” Carson said. “I was able to gain a better understanding of the inner city and how much poverty there is. Through this trip, I felt as if I was really able to make a difference in the lives of others and I wanted to create that same influence again.”
