Intermediate Financial Analyst at UPMC in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Less than 18 months after graduating from Waynesburg University in 2013, Carly Smithyman’s life has flipped 180 degrees. Smithyman went from being a student and captain of two athletic teams on campus to a newlywed and full-time employee at one of the most prestigious medical centers in the country. Although the change was drastic, she has loved every minute of it.
Smithyman, who earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting with minors in finance and management, is an intermediate financial analyst in a financial management rotational program at UPMC in Pittsburgh Pa. In the office, she writes a quarterly report to reflect UPMC’s fiscal year. Smithyman’s main task is to ensure that all UPMC physicians stay on track with their supply costs so they continue to meet targets and excel in their line of business.
“This job is a great opportunity for me because it is an accelerated program that allows me to assume a management role in two years when it would typically take five,” said Smithyman.
She believes the business classes she completed at Waynesburg as well as the extra-curricular activities she was involved in helped pave the way to a successful first year as a graduate. Overall, her time at Waynesburg was a “very fortunate experience.”
“Having the opportunity to get involved in many activities along my journey at Waynesburg enabled me to solidify my current job in October of my senior year,” said Smithyman. “It was a great feeling to know that all of my hard work and determination paid off.”
