M.Ed. IN SPECIAL EDUCATION AND SPECIAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATION

Are you a certified teacher in Pennsylvania hoping to add a Special Education certification to your instructional certificate? If so, please consider Waynesburg University's Master of Education in Special Education or the Special Education Certification program in grades K-8 or 7-12. The Certification program consists of ten courses, and thirty credits. Two additional courses are required for the Master of Education in Special Education degree. As a student of either the Master of Education in Special Education or the Special Education Certification program, you will enjoy the optimum blend of theory, application, and field experiences to prepare you to teach students with special needs in the special education setting as well as the inclusive setting. For your convenience, classes are offered in the evenings (6:00 pm-10:00 pm ) in eight week sessions in the spring, summer, and fall with a total of six sessions held during the calendar year. Students may enroll at any time throughout the year. If students attend one course per 8 week session and two courses during the summer II session, the Certification program can be complete in approximately 18 months and the Masters degree in approximately 18-20 months. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS In order to be admitted to ALL Graduate Education Programs, the student must have met the following criteria: In addition, applicants to the Special Education Certification Program must meet the following additional criteria: Elementary K-6 Existing Pennsylvania teacher certification in one of the following areas for 7-12 certifications: Secondary 7-12 Students whose native language is not English must also submit an official report of TOEFL scores or other proof of competency in English. CONDITIONAL ADMISSIONS Individuals with a Pennsylvania Level I Instructional Certificate may take up to 24 credits without enrolling in a degree program. These credits will apply toward a Level II Instructional Certificate and will be eligible for Act 48 credit. Individuals who already have their Level II Instructional Certificate may enroll in courses, up to 24 credits, without enrolling in a degree program to fulfill Act 48 requirements for continued certification.
Financial aid information may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office. Student loans are available to students enrolled for a minimum of six semester hours. For the purposes of graduate education programs, a full-time student is considered to be anyone enrolled in a minimum of nine semester hours. PREREQUISITES For all graduate education programs a student will need to have access to an Internet connection: high speed access is preferred. Students need basic computer skills including e-mail, word processing, and Internet usage to succeed in these programs.
