WIRELESS ROUTERS

Wireless routers SHOULD NOT be used in the Residential Halls because of the following reasons:

  • Wired Residence Hall connections are faster and more secure than wireless connections
  • Open wireless routers can allow others on your cable connection reducing the speed of your internet connection and increasing the potential for others to access information on your computer
  • Owners of wireless routers can be held accountable for any actions taken by other users including illegal music downloads resulting in State/Federal fines
  • Comcast (the University Internet Provider) requests that no 3rd party provided wireless equipment be used to ensure better service & support

OTHER ITEMS

  • A Network Card – Most computers come with a build-in network card. You should have a port on your computer.
  • A Network Cable - You will need a CAT 5e Ethernet Patch Cable (RJ45) at least 14 feet in length. This cable will be used to connect your computer (using the port described above) to the network port provided in your room.

PLEASE NOTE: The Network Cable is not the same as a telephone wire. Most telephone wires are flat while the network cable is round. The ends on the telephone cable are slightly smaller than the network cable. Plugging a telephone cable into the network port can cause damage to the port.
  • A Printer – A printer is optional. You can always save your documents to the SkyDrive in myConnect and then go to a Lab to print them. There is no cost to print documents in the Labs.
