Waynesburg University’s Performing Arts Series will present The Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artists with pianist and music director, Mark Trawka, in concert Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center.
Singers of The Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artists will perform a variety of selections from operas and musical theater pieces during the concert, which is free and open to the public.
Trawka will also lead Waynesburg University students of the Lamplighter Choir in a workshop of two of Giuseppe Verdi’s choral masterpieces. The famous “Anvil Chorus” from "II Trovatore" and the iconic “Va pensiero” from "Nabucco," will be recreated on stage. This choral masterclass will take place at 5 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center. High school students with an interest in musical theater are encouraged to attend. The workshop is also open to the public.
The Pittsburgh Opera Resident Artist Program has a rich tradition of training young opera singers as they begin their journey into solo careers. Among the alumni of this rigorous program include world renowned tenor Rolando Villazon; international mezzo Marianne Cornetti; Metropolitan Opera’s Maria Zifcheck; and the unmatchable comedic bass Kevin Glavin. Waynesburg University’s Assistant Professor of Vocal Music and Director of Choral Music, Melanie Catana, is also a graduate of the Resident Artist Program.
