This year, TUBACHRISTMAS celebrates its 44th anniversary. The world-wide event was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell. Bell was born on Christmas in 1902.
Ironically, much of the music performed at these events was composed by American composer Alec Wilder who passed away on Christmas Eve in 1980.
The first TUBACHRISTMAS concert was held in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Dec. 22, 1974.
