Teaching Vocational Exploration in the Classroom

NetVUE Regional Gathering

In the University classroom, instructors strive to share field-specific knowledge, build skills that will translate into modern careers and assist students to develop their abilities through practice. Additionally, educators serve as academic advisors, career mentors and life coaches. Among so many other responsibilities for those who teach, what role can vocational exploration play in our college classrooms?

Teaching Vocational Exploration in the Classroom will focus on providing faculty with concrete exploration and reflection strategies they can integrate into their curricula. Faculty will be encouraged to reflect on their definition of vocation, share current practices and discuss innovative methods for addressing vocational exploration. Our goal is to equip faculty with the information and tools they need to help students make connections between coursework, service and career goals. Faculty are in an excellent position to show students how they can create unity between their classroom experiences, extracurricular opportunities and vocational exploration. Erin VanLaningham, director of NetVUE Scholarly Resources Project, and Carter Aikin, NetVUE grants director, will lead sessions on intentional strategies that can be integrated into classroom experiences. In addition, a panel of Waynesburg University faculty will share their experiences integrating discussion of purpose and vocational exploration into general education courses.

This event is made possible by the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE). NetVUE is administered by the Council of Independent Colleges with generous support from Lilly Endowment Inc.
