English professor to host panel on gender and gaming

The webinar will be held March 30

Waynesburg University’s Department of English and Foreign Languages will hold a webinar titled “LEVEL UP: A Roundtable Discussion on Gender and Gaming” Wednesday, March 30, at noon.

The webinar is free and open to anyone with an interest in the topic. To register, individuals should visit waynesburg.edu/levelup.

Dr. Jamie Dessart, professor of English, is hosting the event that will feature Auverin Morrow, an esports brand manager for Hi-Rez Studios; Kate Dessart, a content manager for Torrent Esports; and Freya Marquadt, a Rocket League coach for Women’s Car Ball Championship (WCBC) and graphic designer for Torrent Esports.

The panel was inspired by Dr. Dessert’s “Ready Player One: The Literary Foundations of Video Games” course and will cover the panel’s experience and the dynamics of gender in the gaming industry.

“I thought it would be interesting to bring together people who work in the industry to talk and interact with my students,” said Dr. Dessart. “The University esports program is getting up and running and this dovetailed nicely with that and the Initiative on Diversity and Belonging.”
