Waynesburg University recently received a $1.4 million estate gift in memory of Waynesburg College alumna Stephanie A. Balik. The funds will establish the Stephanie A. Balik Honor Scholarship, which will benefit qualifying incoming freshmen.

Balik received her Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Waynesburg College in 1945. The daughter of immigrant parents who spoke little English, Balik had an affinity for learning. Encouraged by her sisters, she wrote a letter to the College inquiring about scholarships. Then Waynesburg College President Paul R “Prexy” Stewart answered her inquiry with a visit to her high school to inform her that she would receive a scholarship to pursue her education.

After receiving her degree, Balik went on to hold a successful career as an engineering assistant in the Engineering Department at Westinghouse Electric Corporation in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, where she remained for 38 years until her retirement. Balik attributed her professional success to Waynesburg and treasured the opportunity she was given to receive an education from the College.

Known by many for her kindness and loving personality, the Stephanie A. Balik Honor Scholarship is established in memory of Balik with the hope of providing students the opportunity to pursue an education that will help them attain their career goals and spread kindness to the world.
