Waynesburg University will hold a special convocation Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. in Roberts Chapel to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Dr. Georj Lewis, president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College and southwestern Pennsylvania native, will serve as the guest speaker.
The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Lewis was named the fourth president of Atlanta Metropolitan State College in November 2019 after serving as interim president since July 1, 2019.
He began his higher education career in admissions and enrollment, coordinating minority recruitment efforts. Lewis then moved into multicultural affairs and led diversity efforts at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and Georgia Southern University.
After serving as a diversity professional, he transitioned to senior-level administration positions. Through the years, he has held the following positions: dean of students at Georgia Southern University, vice chancellor for student affairs at Indiana University Northwest, vice president for student affairs at Armstrong State University and vice president for student affairs at Georgia Southern University.
Dr. Lewis has participated in the Millennium Leadership Initiative through the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, as well as the Executive Leadership Institute and the Advanced Leadership Academy through the University System of Georgia.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in business/accounting and a master’s degree in counseling/student personnel, both from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he earned a doctorate in leadership from Georgia Southern University.
Dr. Lewis and his wife, Anchelle, have three children and three grandchildren.
