Waynesburg University’s 2018-2019 academic school year officially began Thursday, Aug. 23, with the University’s annual Matriculation Ceremony. President Douglas G. Lee and other University leaders welcomed the freshman class at the 2 p.m. ceremony in Roberts Chapel.
This year, students representing 60 different majors and academic areas of interest and 20 states, including Hawaii and Washington, matriculated to Waynesburg University.
During the ceremony, Lee encouraged incoming students to practice perseverance, citing examples of the University’s early leaders faithfully persevering amidst hardships.
“Practice perseverance,” Lee said. “It is a journey that you will not travel alone; we are all with you on that journey. Develop that essential quality of your character, and almost nothing will be impossible for you.”
The names of matriculating students were announced by Lanny Frattare, assistant professor of communication and former voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Doug Wilson, lecturer of communication.
Matriculation marks the beginning of an eventful weekend organized to introduce freshmen to their new home at Waynesburg University. The incoming class will meet with faculty, participate in activities that allow them to meet other new students and attend numerous informational meetings.
On Saturday, new students will also participate in service projects across Greene County and in Morgantown, West Virginia. Service sites include Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Corner Cupboard Food Bank and Bartlett House Homeless Shelter, among others.
“New student move-in is always exciting! The entire campus community is involved in welcoming our new students and their families to campus,” said Jackie Palko, director of undergraduate admissions. “From lunch with the faculty to our matriculation ceremony and a group service project, our students become immediate members of the Waynesburg community.”
More than $10 million in aid was awarded to the incoming class.
Freshmen moved into their residence halls Thursday, Aug. 23. Upperclassmen will move into residence halls Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26, and classes will begin Monday, Aug. 27.
