Guided by faith, learning and service, 45 Waynesburg University students will serve communities both domestically and abroad over spring break. This year’s destinations include Pittsburgh, Pa., Concord, N.C., Nassau, Bahamas, and Dauphin Island, Ala.
Urban Impact – Pittsburgh, Pa.
From Sunday, March 1, to Friday, March 6, 22 students will work alongside Urban Impact’s partners to serve the North Side of Pittsburgh. The trip will be an opportunity to connect with classmates as they eat, pray and worship together. The trip will be led by Grace Hyland, resident director and Bonner coordinator. Two student leaders, senior nursing major Maeve Hanley and junior criminal justice major Jacob Harker, will also attend.
“These service opportunities tend to push students out of their comfort zone but help them learn lots about people, the world and even themselves,” Hyland said. “I believe it to be important to get out and see the direct impact our students can make on the world around us.”
Habitat for Humanity Cabarrus County – Concord, N.C.
Six students will serve the community through home improvement in Concord, N.C., from Sunday, March 1, to Saturday, March 7. Angelica Good, resident director, assistant director of the Center for Service Leadership and cheerleading coach, and Aaron Sielski, assistant dean of students, will lead the trip.
Students will have the opportunity to connect and participate in hands-on service projects.
Healthcare Immersion – Nassau, Bahamas
Eve Weaver, associate professor of nursing and assistant director for online nursing programs, and Lina Hixson, associate professor of nursing and assistant director of graduate and professional nursing programs, will lead 10 students to Nassau, Bahamas, from Saturday, Feb. 28, to Friday, March 6.
“I am looking forward to not just helping the surrounding communities but being able to do so with my fellow classmates,” said Alex Delaney, a junior nursing major from Sturgeon, Pa. “I hope my service work in the Bahamas not only impacts the rest of my life but also all of those that I will meet in that community as well.”
Dauphin Island – Alabama
Seven students will serve in Dauphin Island, Ala., from Saturday, Feb. 28, to Saturday, March 7. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct research and learn about the conservation of local ecosystems.
The trip will be led by Dr. Christian Hayes, assistant professor of biology and director of marine science, and Dr. Tracey Dohn, associate professor of biology.
