Waynesburg University will celebrate the 176th anniversary of its charter by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a special convocation at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, in Roberts Chapel.
Lanny Frattare, a longtime sports broadcaster and a former assistant professor of communication at Waynesburg University, will deliver the convocation address. His message will reflect on Luke 12:48: “To whom much is given, much is required.”
The convocation will be livestreamed at waynesburg.edu/live.
Frattare has been connected to Waynesburg University since April 2008. In addition to his role of assistant professor of communication, he also served as faculty advisor for WCYJ-FM and special assistant to the Office of University Relations until December 2024. In 2010, Frattare established the University’s annual Sports Announcing Camp.
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Frattare is a graduate of Ithaca College. He is a father to David (Ann Marie) and Megan and a grandfather to Spencer (a 2024 Waynesburg graduate), Carly and Timothy. Frattare served as the radio voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates for 33 years and was inducted into the Pittsburgh Pirates Media Wall of Fame in September 2025.
Beyond his major league sports résumé, Frattare has an array of experience broadcasting high school and minor league sports, the Pony League World Series and West Virginia University baseball. He hosts an annual charity golf tournament at Chartiers Country Club to benefit Familylinks, which supports western Pennsylvanians through community, behavioral and social programs. The tournament has raised more than $4 million since its inception and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026.
