University to introduce new, interdisciplinary data science major

Matthew Stultz Jun 5, 2019

Waynesburg University’s Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics will offer a new major in data science at the undergraduate level beginning the fall of 2019.

A lot of data science degrees are only offered at the Masters level. Our program prepares students for immediate job opportunities in this fast-growing career.”

Richard Leipold, chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics

The Data Science Program has been designed to prepare students for the field of data science by providing the required fundamental courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science. Students will learn data analysis, visualization, data mining, data analytics and machine learning.

“The data science major at Waynesburg University is one of a few in our area being offered at the undergraduate level,” said Richard Leipold, chair of the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics and professor of computer science. “A lot of data science degrees are only offered at the Masters level. Our program prepares students for immediate job opportunities in this fast-growing career.”

A majority of the curriculum will include a combination of computer science, mathematics and data science courses.

The data science courses, which will be new, include DSC 205 Introduction to Data Science, DSC 305 Data Analysis and Visualization, DSC 306 Data Mining, DSC 405 Web Analytics and Mining and DSC 406 Machine Learning, and will be taught by a professional data scientist.

“Data science is a mixture of high-level mathematics and computer science with some artificial intelligence thrown in,” shared Leipold.

He explained that data scientists mine large databases, extract and structure information and present it in visual and meaningful ways so that it can be used to help answer business and science questions.

“Demand is very high; there just aren’t enough students going into the field,” added Leipold. “[Data science] will provide a high-level technology degree to our computer science majors. It definitely sets Waynesburg apart from other schools.”

Interested students should have an extensive background in math and technology prior to enrolling.
