Our latest Alumni Q&A features Scott Fichter (MEd '12), #1 bestselling author of The Weekly Game Plan.
Q: What is your current job/title, and what is your current location?
My current job title is a high school special education teacher, working in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. I am also a #1 bestselling author, speaker, and consultant/coach helping entrepreneurs, businesses, and sports programs create a game plan for their personal lives, business, or team by developing innovative strategies to achieve their goals.
Q: Can you describe your typical day?
My typical day consists of me waking up between 4:30-5:00 a.m. I start off reading my devotional, then my Bible chapters for the day. Then I read my daily affirmation for the goals I will achieve, reread my wedding vows, and complete my weekly game plan task from my book The Weekly Game Plan. After that, I do a quick 10-20 minute workout, eat breakfast, write a morning note to my wife, and record a video for my kids. Then I go about my teaching day and schedule. At the conclusion of school, I do my consultant and coaching work until I get home to spend the evening with my family.
Q: Can you describe your time at Waynesburg and how it shaped you as a person?
Waynesburg helped me see the world of education differently by providing in-depth experiences about truths that happen inside and outside of the classroom. This helped me prepare for my journey as a teacher.
Q: What is your favorite memory as a Waynesburg student?
My favorite memory was completing my graduate work to obtain my master’s degree, as that was something I worked very hard to achieve.
Q: Where has life taken you since graduating from Waynesburg University?
Since graduating, I became a full-time teacher, which I credit to obtaining my master’s degree from the University. This helped me to expand my abilities to fulfill school needs. In addition, I have run multiple businesses: one that was really successful, and a handful that I have failed at, but were great learning and growth experiences. All of these experiences have led me to where I am today, running my current business making an impact on as many lives as possible!
Q: Why is staying connected with your alma mater important to you?
I believe there is great value in staying in connection with your alma mater because of the time invested by both the school and the individual. Being able to be a bridge for future students on their career or entrepreneurial paths by staying connected is also very valuable for all involved.
Q: Who was your favorite professor at Waynesburg, and why?
My favorite professor was Ms. Megan Marie Van Fossan because she was very detail-oriented and really taught our class the ropes of the school systems and how the world of special education works.
Q: What advice do you have for current students? For recent graduates?
For current students and for graduates, my advice is find your passion. What excites you to get up in the morning? What pushes you to achieve your goals? What is the driving force that fuels you to want to succeed and make a positive impact? Answer these questions for yourself. Then discover how you can use your passion every day to serve others and make a positive impact on this world. One person can spark a positive change, and you never know who is watching that you can impact. And I would leave them with this, our businesses slogan, in everything you do… No Slack Just Hustle!
