Oct 14, 2025

Criminal justice students from Waynesburg University received an unparalleled, behind-the-scenes tour of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey last week, gaining direct insight into the diverse and demanding careers in modern law enforcement. The visit was designed to bridge classroom theory with real-world application, offering students a tangible look at their potential futures.

A key highlight of the trip was the opportunity for students to connect with Waynesburg University alumnus Lieutenant G. Powell, Commander of the Tactical Operations Division in the Bureau of Emergency and Special Operations. Lt. Powell graciously met with the students and arranged for exclusive demonstrations from several elite units under his command.

The students engaged with academy staff and witnessed thrilling, high-stakes demonstrations from the K-9 unit, the famed mounted unit and the highly specialized Hazardous Device and Explosives Section (HDES). These presentations provided a clear view of the advanced skills and intense training required for troopers in specialized fields.

Timothy A. Gilbert, Director of Public Safety and Instructor of Criminal Justice at Waynesburg University, organized the visit to inspire and inform his students.

"My hope is that our students left with a clear understanding of the incredible opportunities they can get from working for the Pennsylvania State Police," said Gilbert. "Seeing the professionalism and dedication of the Troopers firsthand is an invaluable part of their education."

This immersive experience underscores the University’s commitment to providing criminal justice majors with practical knowledge and networking opportunities that are crucial for a successful career in public service.
