The Ellen O’Brien Gaiser Center will hold an educational seminar on addiction, medicated-assisted treatment and withdrawal management at Waynesburg University’s Center for Criminal Justice and Forensic Investigation Tuesday, January 20, at 6:30 p.m.
Designed to provide practical, research-informed education for students, community members, medical professionals and families, the seminar is free and open to the public.
Presented by Gaiser’s medical director, Dr. C. Thomas Brophy, the seminar will include discussion on various topics, including trends in substance abuse, the neuroscience of addiction, withdrawal management, medication-assisted treatment, and how to use the neuroscience of addiction to your advantage.
“The ability to effect positive change within our communities always starts with education,” said Dr. Brophy. “Understanding how substance abuse affects the brain informs us about how it impacts behaviors, mental health, and the ability to embrace recovery. The more people we can share this education with, the better those communities will be armed to mitigate these challenges.”
Dr. Brophy began working with the Gaiser Center in 2019 and serves as medical director for the facility. Dr. Brophy earned a neuroscience degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his medical residency at Allegheny General Hospital to become one of the region’s only physicians board-certified in both addiction medicine and emergency medicine.
With a passion for teaching, Dr. Brophy is known for his educational outreach efforts. He is a regular contributor to KDKA radio and has conducted more than 100 public education seminars on topics related to addiction. He dedicates his life to helping those struggling with addiction while promoting an understanding of the neurophysiology of addiction, so everyone can be part of the solution.
“We are excited to partner with Waynesburg University to bring this vital event to the community,” said Joe Mahoney, LSW, executive director of the Gaiser Center. “As we launch our addiction treatment programs in Greene County, we want to ensure that Gaiser's message of hope and recovery is accessible to everyone in Greene County, neighboring counties, and our partners.”
