Student Spotlight: Ethan Mata ('27)

Ethan Mata Jul 15, 2026

My name is Ethan Mata, and I am a senior nursing major at Waynesburg University. Choosing to attend Waynesburg has been one of the most impactful decisions of my life. It was a choice made with intention and discernment, guided by the person and professional I aspire to become. The education I have received has fostered a strong foundation of knowledge, compassion, and community.

What sets Waynesburg University apart is a mindset that permeates its student body, a shared sense of calling to serve others in ways that reflect the University’s Christian mission and purpose. Within the nursing program, I have witnessed this through the dedication, grace, and support of both faculty and peers. I have built meaningful relationships that have enriched me not only as a student, but also as a future nurse committed to compassionate care.

My time at Waynesburg has been marked by growth in faith, learning, and service. Through fellowship groups and Bible studies, I have strengthened my spiritual foundation. The University’s commitment to service is evident in its community involvement and volunteer opportunities, which have allowed me to live out that faith in tangible ways.

Academically, I have been deeply influenced by faculty members such as Dr. Sherry Zak, Chairperson for the Nursing Department, and Dr. Jessica Floyd, Associate Professor of Nursing. Their teaching reflects a genuine investment in each student, combining personal connection with diverse and effective instructional methods. They challenge us not only to succeed, but to grow into professionals who lead with integrity and purpose. As the saying goes, “iron sharpens iron,” and I have been shaped in an environment where excellence is both expected and supported.

The resources and hands-on opportunities at Waynesburg have also been instrumental in my development. The Immersion Lab and advanced simulation technologies have strengthened my skills and confidence. Beginning clinical experiences in my sophomore year has been especially impactful, allowing me to connect classroom knowledge with real-world patient care early in my education. These experiences have affirmed my calling to nursing and deepened my commitment to serving others as a healthcare advocate. Through diverse clinical settings, I have seen firsthand how compassionate, well-trained nurses can make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and communities.

I am grateful for the preparation and personal growth I have gained at Waynesburg University. With the support of alumni and friends, I believe Waynesburg can continue shaping individuals who are called to make a difference in the world through faith, service, and professional excellence.
