Summer play features trio of dating-themed plays

Performances to be held July 30 & 31

Matthew Stultz Jul 27, 2021

The Waynesburg University Theatre Program will present “Bad Dates: An Evening of Comedic Disasters,” Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center.

Both evenings are open to the public. Tickets cost $5 and can be purchased in advance at waynesburg.ticketleap.com/dates or at the door.

Theatre is meant to be seen by an audience, and all of our actors have volunteered countless hours in order to entertain and bring laughs to our town.”

Edward Powers, director

The three plays, all of which pertain to dating, include “Sure Thing,” by David Ives; “Blind Date,” by Horton Foote; and “Check Please,” by Jonathan Rand.

“These three short comedies present a variety of humorous situations that I'm sure the audience will enjoy,” shared Edward Powers, professor of theatre and director. “‘Sure Thing’ is about two people on a date and every time one of them says the ‘wrong thing’ a bell sounds and they get to redo the moment. ‘Blind Date’ is a sweet story set in the 1920s about an awkward situation that seems to get out of hand before it gets better. And ‘Check Please’ is a fast-paced look at how an evening of dates just keeps getting worse and worse.”

The cast includes several Waynesburg University alumni as well as members of the Waynesburg community.

Alumni cast members include Kristina Fisher, Holly Hendershot, Luke Payson, Jordan Thompson, Cory Tretinik, Daniel Wozniak and Ben Zyra. Community cast members include Alaina Camps, Tomē Custer and Michelle Thompson.

“I thoroughly enjoy bringing alumni back and working with community members,” added Powers. “Theatre is meant to be seen by an audience, and all of our actors have volunteered countless hours in order to entertain and bring laughs to our town.”

The three individual plays are produced through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc. and Playscripts, Inc.

In accordance with the Keep Waynesburg Well plan and for the auditorium to operate at full capacity, masks will be required by audience members at all times.
