Waynesburg University junior accounting major Evan Como from Finleyville, Pennsylvania, has been awarded the Rae of Light Endowed Scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year.

The Rae of Light Endowed Scholarship was created to honor Araella Renee Swift Bornmann, “Rae,” who fought hard against cancer until she passed away during her junior year at Waynesburg in 2018.

“She really was just a light on campus,” said University Chaplain Anthony Jarrell. “She was just a joy to be around, and she loved Jesus and wanted others to love Jesus.”

This distinguished award is awarded annually to one student who is active in campus ministry and is passionate about spreading the love of Jesus. The recipient is peer-nominated, and all sophomores and juniors have the opportunity to be selected. The nomination process typically begins at the start of each spring semester.

Como shared that his family, especially his grandfather, has left a huge impact on his faith journey. His church and the community at Waynesburg have also contributed to his love of Christ.

“I always just learned from him and wanted to be like him,” said Como. “Even coming to Waynesburg, that’s how the incredible people have helped me grow my faith [in ways] I never would have imagined possible.”

Como is an active member of the Waynesburg faith community, leading the Men’s Huddle, a men’s Bible study that convenes on Tuesday nights, facilitating participation in March Madness through the Center for Campus Ministry and heading a group worship night being held on Tuesday, April 7.

“Evan displays a heart of inclusion and inviting others,” Jarrell shared. “Evan is someone who goes out of his way to make sure that people feel seen and included.”

Outside of academics and campus involvement, Como is an avid sports fan, particularly of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loves to spend time with friends, often playing pickleball and watching movies with them.
