Meet Dr. Sherry Zak, Ph.D., RN, Director of Nursing and Health Services and associate professor of nursing at Waynesburg University. Dr. Zak is passionate about leading programs focused on student success and innovation. Under her leadership, Waynesburg University's Health Services is committed to providing high-quality care for common health concerns while supporting students' well-being and helping them navigate a smooth transition to campus.
Q: What services are available to students through Health Services?
A: Health Services is here to support students throughout their time at Waynesburg by providing assessment and care for common health concerns, wellness support, health education, referrals when appropriate, and assistance navigating healthcare needs while away from home. We also coordinate wellness initiatives such as flu clinics, blood drives, and health-related programming across campus. Sometimes students just need someone to answer a health question, help determine next steps or provide reassurance, and we are here for that too.
Q: What advice do you give students who are nervous about managing their health independently?
A: I remind students that no one expects them to have everything figured out immediately. Learning to manage your health is part of becoming independent, just like learning to manage classes, finances, or time. Ask questions, seek help early, and do not ignore concerns because you are worried they are "small." One of the most important skills you can develop is learning when to ask for support. You do not have to navigate it alone.
Q: What’s something students are always surprised to learn about you?
A: Students are often surprised to learn that I am actually a graduate of Waynesburg University’s BSN program, so I once sat in many of the same classrooms and walked the same campus paths they do now. I understand what it feels like to be a student here because I started here myself. They’re also usually surprised to learn that I absolutely love manatees. I’ve always thought they were fascinating—calm, gentle, and impossible not to love! And if students stop by Stewart Hall, they quickly learn another important fact about me: there is usually candy outside my office. I firmly believe a little chocolate and encouragement can go a long way.
Q: What’s one piece of wellness advice you think every student should hear?
A: Take care of yourself before you feel like you have no choice. Students often wait until stress, lack of sleep, poor eating habits, or burnout catches up with them. Your physical and mental health affect everything—your academics, relationships, and overall experience. Sleep matters. Movement matters. Taking breaks matters. Asking for help matters. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
