Public Safety at WU: Meet Timothy Gilbert

Jun 4, 2026

Meet Tim Gilbert, Director of the Department of Public Safety and full-time instructor of criminal justice at Waynesburg University. With more than 28 years of law enforcement experience, including a career with the Pennsylvania State Police focused on undercover narcotics and criminal investigations, he brings real-world expertise to campus safety and the classroom.

Under his leadership, the Department of Public Safety is committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you on campus?
A: Every day is a great opportunity to engage with our campus community. My work leading the Department of Public Safety integrates perfectly with my role as a Criminal Justice instructor. Whether I am coordinating safety protocols with my team or developing curriculum and engaging with students in the classroom, my focus is always on supporting, protecting, and educating our university community.

Q: What are some of the ways the Department of Public Safety supports students beyond emergencies?
A: Our primary goal is to maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming environment so students can focus on their education. We handle the practical logistics of campus life, from managing digital access to buildings to coordinating the security footprint for large events like commencement. We strive to be a proactive, reliable, and approachable presence on campus every single day.

Q: What’s something students are always surprised to learn about you?
A: Students are usually surprised to learn that I design custom metal challenge coins for Law Enforcement and military units. It is a creative process that allows me to stay connected to my law enforcement roots and honor the work of those units.

Q: What advice would you give to incoming first-year students?
A: Take personal responsibility for your success and stay disciplined. A big part of college is learning to live with others in our campus community, so it is vital to always be respectful of those around you. Additionally, take the time to know where to find campus resources, and never hesitate to ask for help if you don't know something.
