Spring brings creativity as Waynesburg University’s Department of Fine Arts hosts its Student Art Exhibition in the Benedum Fine Arts Gallery. Running from April 13 to April 24, this exhibit showcases student artwork from multiple Fine Arts classes at Waynesburg University.
Pieces from nearly thirty students are on display in five different mediums, including clay, acrylic, jewelry, pencil and digital art. Still life paintings, ceramic pots and sculptures, collages and more line the walls and tables of the exhibit. While some works are created by art majors, many pieces come from Waynesburg University students from a variety of academic programs who are interested in the arts.
“Taking several pieces of your work and putting it up on the wall for other people to see is sometimes humbling, but we don't mean it to be humbling,” said Assistant Professor of Fine Arts and Communication Lisa Rasmussen. “We mean to put the work up there to show the rest of the campus and to recognize these students who have worked so hard all semester.”
According to a report published by the World Economic Forum, one of the top skills employers are seeking in today’s job market is creative thinking, a skill developed through art.
“Complementing technology-related skills, creative thinking, resilience, flexibility and agility, along with curiosity and lifelong learning, are also expected to continue to rise in importance over the 2025-2030 period,” the report said.
“Art is a lateral thinking type of thinking instead of a straightforward ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer,” Rasmussen said. “This teaches students, especially in drawing, metals and ceramics classes, to observe and pay attention to detail—skills many employers are looking for.”
The exhibit is on display until April 24. For more information, visit the event page or contact Rasmussen at lrasmuss@waynesburg.edu.
