When I enrolled in the SUD Workforce Development Program at Waynesburg University, I didn’t fully anticipate how it would reshape the way I think. I came in with experience, currently serving as a clinical supervisor for a new hospital-based Substance Recovery Unit. What this graduate program gave me was something more which is depth, exploration and sharping my clinical perspective.

What I enjoy most about being a UWDP scholar is continuing to challenge how I think about treatment approaches and counseling. Each class has pushed me to think outside of the box and look at counseling from a different lens that allows me to grow professionally. Not only is the course work extremely helpful, but also engaging. I look forward to reading the material and analyzing different ideas that leaves me taking away from my assignments new ideas and knowledge that I can implement.

Waynesburg University’s addiction counseling concentration has allowed me to think more critically about how I analyze clinical information, view clients and approach ethical dilemmas. The integration of clinical practices along with cultural competency pushes me to think in a different direction. I have become more intentional and curious.

What stands out most is the faculty. The professors genuinely care and invest in your development. They challenge you, encourage you and meet you where you are. That makes a real difference in how you show up for class. For anyone considering this program, especially working professionals in the addiction field, this concentration will advance your skills and refine your thinking.

University Workforce Development Program

The graduate counseling program at Waynesburg University was awarded the University Workforce Development grant. The University Workforce Development Program (UWDP) is supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) as part of an award totaling $1,000,000 over a 30-month period effective April 2025.

The purpose of the UWDP is to address workforce shortages in substance use disorder (SUD) counseling by strengthening the workforce with qualified professionals.
