When I started looking at colleges, I knew right away that Waynesburg was going to be my home. It had an amazing forensic science program and provided an opportunity to play softball during my collegiate years. Waynesburg was the one and only school I applied to!
During my freshman year, as a softball player and a forensic science major, I grew so much. I made many lifelong friends and memories, all while getting an amazing education from professors who truly cared. However, during my first winter on campus, I sustained an ankle injury that required surgical repair. After experiencing surgery, I realized that being a nurse was a better use of the gifts I was given. So, I switched my major and five years later, here I am, ready to go out into the world as a nurse.
Waynesburg’s nursing program has challenged me to develop my critical thinking skills, pushed me to be my best, and provided kind, thoughtful instructors who truly care about my success. It was not always easy, but I know that I am prepared to enter the workforce and care for my patients. Waynesburg’s reputation in the nursing field, along with the experiences I gained during school, also allowed me to have a job lined up at Jefferson Hospital on their cardiac step-down unit right after graduation.
Not only that, but Waynesburg provided me with the opportunity to receive a faith-based education. Coming from a public school, it was incredible to speak openly with professors, attend chapel or Bible studies on campus, and participate in mission trips. Some of my favorite memories from college are from the mission trips I attended. It was such an incredible way to experience new cultures, share my faith with others, and use the skills I’ve developed to help others.
To new students, especially nursing students entering the program, I always recommend finding balance. Nursing school will push and consistently challenge you, which is why it is so important to take breaks. Make sure you have outlets and ways to have fun! Remember, college only happens once, so do not be afraid to try as many clubs and activities as possible.
Overall, my time at Waynesburg is filled with fond memories and so many opportunities I would have never had elsewhere. It seems that even before I knew what the Lord’s plan was for me, He had already placed me exactly where I needed to be, and for that, I am truly thankful.
