Music Program Audition Information

2020 Audition Day for the Music Program at Waynesburg University is February 22 (Accepted Students Day) or any Visitation Day hosted by the Admissions Office throughout the fall or spring semesters.

NOTE: Prospective students are eligible to audition for the Music Program throughout the year, but are not guaranteed scholarship consideration after the Scholarship Application due date, February 1, 2020.

Music Ministry, Entertainment Arts Management (Music), or Music Minor Degrees

All prospective students wishing to pursue a Music Ministry, Entertainment Arts Management (Music), or Music Minor degree in the Fine Arts Department at Waynesburg University are required to:

  1. Apply to the university, and
  2. Audition for the appropriate music program faculty representative.

*Waynesburg University hosts the Mark Flint Music Scholarship Auditions, sponsored by the Clark Opportunity Foundation for area high school seniors wishing to pursue a degree in music and music related disciplines. Contact the Music Program Director for more information about this scholarship opportunity. This audition will be held on the afternoon of Feb 22 @ 3 PM.

Participate in the Music Program Without a Degree

All prospective students wishing to participate in the Music Program at Waynesburg University without pursuing a degree in the Music Program are required to:

  1. Apply to the university, and
  2. Audition for the appropriate music program faculty representative.

Instrumental or Vocal Scholarship

All prospective students wishing to apply for an Instrumental or Vocal Scholarship at Waynesburg University can do so with or without pursuing a degree in the Music Program. However, these students are required to:

  1. Apply to the university having met the 3.0 GPA or higher requirement,
  2. Meet the Scholarship Application due date, and
  3. Audition for the appropriate music program faculty representative.  

To Set Up an Audition

After you complete the Music Program Audition Application form, you will be contacted by the Director of the Music Program to set up your audition and answer any questions. Auditions can also be presented via video recording if necessary, although live auditions are preferred.

Audition Requirements

Voice

  • Be prepared to sing 5-note scales/arpeggios to check your range.
  • Etudes and/or solos: one that demonstrates lyric abilities, one that demonstrates technical abilities.  (Should be approximately 5-10 minutes in total length. Please provide a CD or online accompaniment for your audition.) 
  • Pieces in languages other than English are not mandatory but are welcomed if representative of your individual study. 

Piano, Organ

  • Major Scales/Minor Scales (any form) through 4 sharps and 4 flats, 8-note scales one octave ascending and descending.
  • Etudes and/or solos: one that demonstrates lyric abilities, one that demonstrates technical abilities.  (Should be approximately 5-10 minutes in total length.)  

Strings (Guitar, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass)

  • Major Scales/Minor Scales (any form) through 4 sharps and 4 flats, 8-note scales one octave ascending and descending.
  • Etudes and/or solos: one that demonstrates lyric abilities, one that demonstrates technical abilities.  (Should be approximately 5-10 minutes in total length. Please provide a CD or online accompaniment for your audition if required of your selection.)  

Woodwind, Brass

  • Major Scales/Minor Scales (any form) through 4 sharps and 4 flats, 8-note scales one octave ascending and descending; chromatic scale range of instrument, ascending and descending.
  • Etudes and/or solos: one that demonstrates lyric abilities, one that demonstrates technical abilities.  (Should be approximately 5-10 minutes in total length. Please provide a CD or online accompaniment for your audition if required of your selection.)  

Woodwind and Brass students are encouraged to present audition material for each instrument on which you feel proficient, i.e. Flute/Piccolo, Alto/Tenor Saxophone, Trombone / Euphonium.  

Percussion

  • Major Scales/Minor Scales (any form) through 4 sharps and 4 flats, 8-note scales one octave ascending and descending; chromatic scale range of instrument, ascending and descending;
  • And/or basic rudiments open/closed/open, i.e. single-stroke roll, double-stroke roll, single paradiddle, flam, ruff, single ratamacue taken from the Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments list.
  • Etudes and/or solos: one that demonstrate lyric abilities, one that demonstrates technical abilities.  (Should be approximately 5-10 minutes in total length.)  

Percussion students are encouraged to present audition material for each instrument on which you feel proficient. Timpani (4), a Concert Snare, Mallet Percussion (Bells, Xylophone, Marimba), and a jazz drum kit will be provided for the auditions. Each student must bring appropriate sticks/mallets for the audition.
